Charles W. Harrison has been serving United Methodist Churches in the North Texas Conference since 1988. His areas of expertise are: Youth Ministry, Mission, Christian Education, Church & Family Systems, Evangelism, Christian Spirituality, Spiritual Discernment, Wesleyan Theology, Methodist History, as well as ministry with Singles and Young Adults. He is a well-respected international consultant to local churches, annual conferences, CCYMs, mission organizations, and campus ministries. He is often recruited to serve as a board member in various not for profit organizations or on design teams for large national events and smaller regional conferences. He is passionately committed to serving on the board of Proyecto Abrigo, a missionary ministry in Juarez, Mexico where Charles has been serving since the early 90’s.
Charles is known as the “Red Shoe Evangelist” for always wearing his red shoes.
Charles often says “United Methodists carry their Bibles!” and he tries to live out that saying on a daily basis. His favorite Bible to carry is his John Wesley Study Bible, NRSV.
Charles is also the CEO and Executive Director of The Center for Youth Ministry Excellence and The Youthworker Movement. Through this ministry he works to support, train, and network youthworkers across the United States and internationally. He is a frequently sought after speaker and preacher for Youth Ministry events and especially loves preaching and teaching at junior high camps and retreats. He also finds himself as the occasional key-note speaker at conventions and universities. He served as an adjunct professor of Youth Ministry for Perkins School of Theology at SMU in Dallas for 15 years. He also teaches youth ministry classes on-line through Be A Disciple at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas.
In 2015 he is launching a new endeavor called The Foundation for Ministry Excellence that will be based in Dallas, Texas.
Recently, Charles got together with some of the most creative people on the planet and formed CircuitWriter Media LLC. CWM operates both the United Methodist Reporter and MethoBlog.
Among other things, Charles is the founder of The Center for Wesleyan Renewal in 2006 and Youth Ministry Associates in 1996. In 2002 he also helped to found C2K an urban ministry center based in Oak Cliff at Tyler Street UMC in the heart of Dallas, Texas. He stepped down as Executive Director in 2012 after helping to transition the ministry from the North Texas Conference into the hands of the local church at TSUMC.
Charles has served as a lay-delegate to the North Texas Annual Conference for over 20 years. He currently serves on COSROW for the North Texas Conference (Commission on the Status and Role of Women) and he serves on the Metro-District Board of Laity. He has also served in additional leadership roles at the district, jurisdictional, and national levels of the UMC since the early 90’s. Charles is known for his large network of connections in the “connectional” system of the United Methodist Church. He served for over two decades as a director of Conference and Jurisdictional Youth Camps as well as serving as a camp counselor at Children’s camps.
Charles most enjoys his time with his family. His life-partner, the very smart, beautiful, and talented Rev. Georgia M. Harrison serves as the Adult Education Pastor at First United Methodist Church of Wichita Falls, Texas. After receiving an undergraduate degree at Mississippi College in her home state, Georgia went on to complete a Master’s in Mathematics at Clemson University. She worked in the software development field serving as a Vice-President at a software development firm in Richardson, Texas before answering the call to full time ordained ministry as a Deacon in the UMC. She completed her MDiv at Perkins School of Theology, SMU in 2009.
Charles resides most of the week in Wichita Falls, Texas at the trendy urban Austin Street Lofts downtown just 6 blocks from FUMC in the original school building for the city. He spends a couple of days a week in Dallas serving on staff as the Catalyst Pastor for Kessler Park UMC. He is often on the road nationally and internationally as he serves wearing one or more of his many ministry hats.
Charles and Georgia have two grown children, Ricky and Marisa.
Ricky is following in the “family business” and attends Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina and hopes to be ordained in the North Texas Conference UMC. Ricky has been elected twice to serve as a delegate to the General Conference of the UMC. He did his undergraduate work at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas.
Marisa graduated with honors from Naaman Forrest High School and attends Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls where she is studying nursing. Her home church is Buckingham UMC in Garland, Texas. She served in leadership on North Texas CCYM (Conference Council on Youth Ministry) until she graduated high school in May 2014.
Charles began to answer the call to full-time lay-professional ministry after participating in one of the initial Disciple Bible Study Classes in the 80’s. Before that he was a Retail Executive for a New York City based Flagship Department Store Chain.
Charles loves to read great books. He also writes for several blogs. He has an eclectic taste in music and enjoys live Jazz and Blues as well as poetry slams. He is a pop-culture fanatic and keeps up with all the latest TV shows as well as classic movies. He loves coffee, breakfast, cheeseburgers, sweet tea, dark chocolate, Pho, steak, fresh shrimp, Dr. Pepper, and Tex-Mex food. In his spare time he manages the family Tree Farm in east Texas.
